Turnhouse Road Bus Gate - June '26 Update

5 Jun 2026

The Council's work in advance of a decision on whether to install a bus gate on Turnhouse Road is continuing.

For now, we do not have a concrete date that the proposal will be brought to the Transport Committee for a decision. Lib Dem councillors have pushed for it to be brought to the June meeting so that local people can be given some certainty as soon as possible.

However, with the data from traffic surveys at the end of May still being collated, and further meetings planned between the Council and Lothian Buses before it's ready for committee scrutiny, the September meeting looks more likely.

Local Lib Dem councillor Ed Thornley said, "It's vital that the decision on whether or not to install a bus gate on Turnhouse Road is made in public, by the Transport Committee. That will allow local groups like community councils to come along and have their say. It will also allow councillors to properly scrutinise the decision.

"The Lib Dems have been clear - the communities in this part of the city do not want this, and there are alternative options which have not been properly explored such as bus-priority lighting. We will not support the installation of a bus gate when it comes to committee.

“Council officers have promised further discussions with local community councils and updates to city councillors - we will do our best to keep residents informed as we learn more.”
