As part of the agreements for the new West Craigs development, there were long standing plans to introduce a bus gate on Turnhouse Road. 

This would only be introduced when the new junction at Craigs Road / Maybury Road is complete and is opened up to all vehicles.  However, the bus gate would mean only buses would be able to exit along Turnhouse Road to the Maybury junction at certain times of the day.

Access into Turnhouse Road from the Maybury junction would not be affected by the bus gate - it would be the southbound exit route only.

Lothian Buses have said that, because of its concerns on congestion and delays at the Maybury junction, they may not change their routes to serve West Craigs if their buses don't get priority at Turnhouse Road.

As well as questions over the principle of the bus gate, there have been differing views on what times of the day it should operate.
