Road Safety Changes in Clerwood

5 Aug 2026

The Council is planning several road safety changes in Clerwood, especially around the Fox Covert campus, to coincide with the expected rebuilding work.

After residents raised concerns about speeding on Clermiston Road and dangerous driving on the mini roundabout at Clerwood Terrace, the Lib Dem team raised these with the Council.

In addition to the long-promised pedestrian crossing on Clermiston Road, to give access to Corstorphine Hill and the Forest Kindergarten, the Council is planning to reduce the speed limit between Clerwood Park and Rannoch Road to 20mph. This is a legal process with set timescales, so could take up to 18 months to be put in place.

Two pedestrian crossings are now planned. One is the long-promised crossing on Clermiston Road, the other will be at the mini roundabout on Clerwood Terrace to help children cross this road too, given the safety concerns about the roundabout and junction.

Local Lib Dem councillor Ed Thornley said "We've also asked the Council to run a speed survey on Clermiston Road. The current data is from 2022, which shows an average speed just over the current 30mph limit. If the Council is going to be making these changes, they should make sure they're doing it with accurate, up to date information.

"The new pedestrian crossings are planned to coincide with the rebuilding work on the school campus, in the coming financial year. It'll be great to finally get these crossings - particularly on Clermiston Road, in place. The Council agreed it was needed years ago but there's been no movement until now.

“Last year, Lib Dem councillors made sure the Council had more money for road safety than ever before, but that commitment hasn't yet been matched by real improvements on the ground. There needs to be actual delivery this time, and no more let downs. We'll be pushing the Council to stick to these commitments and finally deliver these much needed safety improvements.”
