Progress on Continental side road Zebra Crossings

2 Nov 2026

Good news! The UK Government has, at last, decided to allow continental side road zebra crossings from 2028. Lib Dem councillors have been pressing for action since 2021 to get these cheap and effective crossings for Edinburgh. Now the Council is pushing the Scottish Government to allow councils to install these crossings as soon as possible. They have white strips but no Belisha beacons, so they cost a tiny fraction of traditional zebra crossings and could greatly improve pedestrian safety on side roads.

Councillor Osler says “Many residents write to me about areas where they feel particularly vulnerable crossing a road. It is deeply frustrating that it can take a considerable amount of time and resources to bring interventions forward. It is great to see England and Wales going ahead with these crossings and I really hope that the Scottish Government move quickly to allow Councils here to do the same.”
