North South Tram Project

10 Sep 2026

After almost 2 years of uncertainty, the decision on whether to take forward the north south tram project will be taken on the 10th September. As readers will be aware, I and the LibDem Group have consistently opposed siting the northern leg of the tram project on the Roseburn Path. We think that this would be a disaster for a route that is a safe haven for wildlife, cyclists, walkers and all the benefits of a ‘long’ park. This view was supported by a huge percentage of those who have contact us and completed the consultation. I asked the Council Leader at a recent Full council meeting what percentage opposed to the Roseburn Tram route in the consultation would be enough. No answer was given! We are not opposed to the tram project as a whole – indeed a route to the Royal Infirmary would complete a vital link -  but have major concerns as to how the rest of it can be funded. Even the next stage could cost £40m, which, as taxpayers money, needs to be spent with good reason and with reasonable expectation of success.
