NHS should accept private ADHD assessments

13 Oct 2025

Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has claimed NHS prescriptions for those with a private ADHD diagnosis will cut waiting lists, speed up treatment, and address the disadvantages for those unable to afford private medication.

GPs don’t have to prescribe medication even when the assessor is NHS approved. The Scottish Government is responsible for setting the policy, but it is for NHS Boards to decide how they implement it.

Christine said: “If the Scottish Government is serious about reducing waiting lists, this is a clear way to start moving towards that goal. Allowing shared care eases pressure on our overstretched NHS.”
