Works to upgrade gas network pipes on Glasgow Road have now begun, leading to lane closures on Maybury and Glasgow Roads and significant traffic delays.
The works are expected to last two weeks from 2nd April.
Local Lib Dem councillor Robert Aldridge said, “We know that this is proving frustrating for residents, and is adding significantly to travel time. We’ve been given assurances by SGN that they are working as fast as they can to minimise disruption, but ultimately it is unavoidable to some extent. There's sometimes never a good time to do work like this.
“We’ll be keeping a close eye on this as the works progress, as it has too often been the case lately that work programmes in our part of the city haven’t run to time.”
