Lib Dems slam lack of answers in new tram report

A new report into extending Edinburgh’s tram network has failed to show how the multi-billion-pound project will be funded, the Liberal Democrats have warned.

The report recommends deferring further business case work on the North-South line and passing responsibility to the SEStran regional transport body. It also advises prioritising the southern leg—running from the City Centre to the Royal Infirmary and BioQuarter—following widespread public opposition to northern route proposals, including the contentious Roseburn Path option.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Councillor Kevin Lang said:

“We’ve reached the end of the tram magic trick, and there’s still no rabbit in the hat.

“Two years after the Scottish Government refused to fund the extension, we were promised answers. Instead, this report confirms the Council is no closer to finding the tens of millions needed for a business case, let alone the billions required for construction.

“Punting this to a regional body proves what has been obvious for years: the Council has no way to deliver or pay for this project.”

Turning to the northern route, Cllr Lang called for a definitive end to proposals affecting local green space:

“In one of the largest consultations in the Council’s history, the public sent an unmistakable message: no trams on the Roseburn Path.

“This is a cherished green corridor in the west of Edinburgh that should be protected, not destroyed. Liberal Democrats argued it should never have been included in the consultation. Yet Labour and SNP councillors insisted on keeping it as a live option.

“The upcoming committee meeting is our chance to take the Roseburn Path option off the table, once and for all.”
