Lib Dems secure review of Silverknowes 'Spaces for People' schemes

24 Jul 2023

Council transport officers are to review the Silverknowes ‘spaces for people’ schemes and return with options for change, thanks to the local Lib Dems.

Local LibDem councillors managed to secure cross-party agreement to review the closure of the road down to the promenade and the so called “quiet cycle route” along Silverknowes Road, Court and Place.

Cllr Lewis Younie said, “Most people never understood the rationale for keeping the road from Silverknowes to the Firth of Forth closed, causing extra carbon emissions from a 3km detour past Muirhouse and down Marine Drive. The quiet cycle route was also labelled ‘a waste of time and money’, even by cyclists.

“When we surveyed households in Silverknowes, the overwhelming view was that these schemes were unnecessary, caused more problems than they solved, and should be changed. It’s why we pushed to get the schemes reviewed.”

The results of the review are expected in the autumn.
