Jardine calls for Government to cut driving test wait times

5 Aug 2025

Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has called on the Department of Transport to cut waiting times for driving tests.

It follows previous reassurances that waiting times - currently unacceptably long- to seven weeks.

In a letter to the minister she and other MPs ask for an update on the Government’s 7 point plan to fix the driving test booking system.

The plan includes hiring 450 more examiners, reviewing the rules for booking driving tests and increasing the amount of notice you need to give to change or cancel a car driving test without losing the fee.

Christine Jardine MP said: “It is unacceptable how long people have to wait to book their driving test, and the Government needs to be held to account.

“Lots of people require a licence when they accept a job or if they have caring responsibilities, so it matters we get this right.

“It is vital the Government does what it can to make life less difficult for carers and stop the stifling of opportunities, by providing us with comprehensive answers.

"I’m grateful to my Lib Dem colleague Olly Glover MP for putting this letter together.
