Cole-Hamilton demands Action on Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse incidents are rising for a second year in a row. Police Scotland have reported that they receive over 5,000 reports of domestic abuse across Edinburgh every year, about 2,700 are logged as criminality. 

Local Liberal Democrat MSP, Alex Cole-Hamilton has been meeting with several charities who work to support women and girls who have experienced domestic abuse.

A key priority has to be giving the police the resources they need to keep people safe and the training to ensure every victim of domestic abuse feels comfortable coming forward.

Despite the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2021) passing five years ago, the SNP government have still to implement two of its key provisions: domestic abuse protection notices and domestic abuse protection orders. We want to see the immediate commencement of Part 1 of the Domestic Abuse Act to introduce protection notices and protection orders that enable urgent action. 

Alex said: “We have got to address the eradication of male violence against women and girls in this country as a priority. When Parliament resumes next month, the first thing I intend to do is demand action on this from the First Minister.”
