Cemetery Maintenance - Time for a Re-think!

Residents have been in touch with the Lib Dem team concerned about the state of local cemeteries, and how the Council is maintaining them. 

Right now, the Council uses a ‘less is more’ approach to grass cutting across many of our local greenspaces, including cemeteries, to support biodiversity and initiatives like ‘No Mow May’.

While we support protecting and enhancing our natural environment, it's clear that the current balance is not working as it should. 

Local Lib Dem councillor Ed Thornley said, "There is absolutely a role for initiatives like No Mow May, but it's important to also recognise that cemeteries are special places with a very specific purpose. Overgrown graves and headstones can be deeply distressing to people who are visiting their loved ones. 

“It's important the Council recognise this and look again at how they look after cemeteries specifically. that's why Lib Dem councillors brought a proposal to Edinburgh Council to reconsider this. While it was a shame not to ge the support of SNP councillors, we were glad that enough councillors saw the need to have this re-think.”

The Council will now consider what greater resource would be needed to increase the maintenance of grass and weeds in cemeteries.
