Turnhouse Road Bus Gate - September '26 Update

A decision on whether or not to proceed with the Council's plans for a bus gate on Turnhouse Road will be taken by the Transport & Environment committee on Thursday 10th September.

The proposal from Council officers is for a bus gate that operates 7am-7pm, Monday to Friday.

This would mean that only buses would be able to exit along Turnhouse Road to the Maybury junction during these times. 

Access into Turnhouse Road from the Maybury junction would not be affected by the bus gate - it would affect the southbound exit route only.

As your local councillors, we conducted a survey of our residents in West Craigs and nearby communities like East Craigs, Craigmount and North Gyle on the bus gate. Residents were clear in what they told us. 

84% of respondents were against a 7am-7pm bus gate. 64% were opposed to a 'peak times only' arrangement.

79% agreed with our suggestion that other bus priority measures, such as bus priority traffic signals, should be considered instead. 

Local Lib Dem councillor Ed Thornley said, "These signals uses sensors on buses and mean that, when the bus approaches a junction, the traffic lights operate to give them priority. This can be done without using bus gates which stop other vehicle access. 

"Liberal Democrat councillors will be voting against installing the bus gate at the committee on 10th September.

“We believe residents' views must be listened to and that other priority measures should be considered.”

The proposed bus gate would be located near the entrance to the industrial estate, so no properties southeast of that point (such as in West Craigs Avenue or Crescent) will have their access to the Maybury junction changed.
