Standing up for Bellevue and Broughton
Something that’s consistently (and rightly) raised to on the doors around Bellevue and Broughton in the last few years is the cleanliness of local streets.
It’s been such a concern, a petition was even lodged by local residents to the Council in 2024.
In response to this, Leith Walk Lib Dem Councillor Jack Caldwell has taken action to get improvements in our area.
This has included getting new litter bins installed (such as on Bellevue Road) which are regularly picked up, getting weeding done on several streets, and catching up regularly with the waste department to track missed bin collections and using data to spot patterns of overflowing.
Several communal bins are placed in locations that are causing concern to residents, and the Lib Dems will continue trying to fight to reduce the number of residents disadvantaged by having a bin next to their window - which can be particularly loud and smelly to say the least.
It’s also vital we look after our environment, both locally and globally.
Lib Dem councillors recently secured extra funding for chemical-free weeding equipment in this year’s Council Budget negotiations, with weeding taking place in the area back in Spring.
Lastly, Councillor Caldwell is currently pushing for repairs to the traffic island outside Drummond, and replacement street trees in the neighbourhood for the missing ones.
He says: "The Council must focus on repairing this traffic island as a matter of safety. The Road Safety department are now looking at extended pavements here to reduce the crossing width, but I'll continue pushing for the quickest action possible.
I was really pleased recently to help obtain replacement gutter covers on Annandale Street, and work alongside residents to stop empty buses being diverted down Green Street and Bellevue Place, which would’ve necessitated the removal of trees and speed bumps.
However I want to hear from you if you have any concerns about our local streets’ cleanliness as folk did feel let down by the Council.
I was grateful to local residents for raising these issues. Please feel free to get in touch any time via cllr.jack.caldwell@edinburgh.gov.uk if I can help."
