The Council is contunuing requested works at Elm Row on pedestrian safety, trees, and statues.

After constructive engagement and scrutiny from Leith Central Community Council and local residents on outstanding issues on Elm Row, Leith Walk Lib Dem Councillor Jack Caldwell is glad to see works either in-progress or planned to improve it.

Outstanding works include, but are not limited to:

  • The cycle lane closest to the bus stops will be fully removed and merged into the newly widened one at the shop-side of the trees to reduce pedestrians crossing two seperate lanes.
  • Replacements for the missing pigeon statues will be installed next year (2026) and the Council are investigating how to better secure them.
  • Bollards will be installed at the pedestrian island behind the bus stops as it is constantly blocked by inappopriotely parked cars.
  • Bollards should be coming back between the cycle lane and the new paralell parking spaces.
  • A Traffic Regulation Order will be made to make the parking ‘Pay and Display’ and introduce a blue badge bay and loading bays.
  • The Council are exploring how to better protect the soil under the trees which is being eroded.
  • A dropped kerb for cycle access to Montfomery Street will be installed.

Please note the above may be subject to change / modification and this list was last updated 25th November 2025.

This is after the path was installed on the grassy section of the London Road corner and bollards installed at Montgomery Street.

Councillor Caldwell said “While I'm not going to sugarcoat the issues which have been long discussed on this page and by the community council, I am grateful to several Council officers for trudging through slow processes to do some of these changes. I am also hoping to meet the head of Parking Enforcement to discuss the consistent pavement parking near the bins”
