Dalmeny Street / Leith Walk junction review coming

As previously indicated, the Council are doing a standalone review of the junction of Dalmeny Street and Leith Walk.

The Council replaced a number of junctions along Leith Walk with “continuous footways” around 2022, when building the tram extension. The idea behind them is to allow pedestrians a priority to continue walking or use a wheelchair across it.

Leith Walk Lib Dem Councillor Jack Caldwell flagged up the high levels of traffic on the road to the Council roads department in 2023 compared to other continuous footway locations.

While the other junctions will remain the same except for the addition of tactile pavements on the edges for blind and partially sighted people, it was recognised that Dalmeny Street was different.

The paving stones across it have again cracked this month, still indicating a much higher volume of traffic than on other side streets with continous footways.

Councillor Caldwell said “The paving stones have broken up for a second time. I'm grateful for residents flagging this to me and believe it will be picked up as part of this wider review. This will likely take place before March 2025”.

At the other end of Dalmeny Street, Councillor Caldwell has set up a petition to improve pedestrian safety after a high number of accidents.
