Bin Review Rationale

22 out of 266 locations were changed. Of the remaining 244, a rationale as to why these were not changed appeared in the Transport & Environment Committee Meeting papers in January 2026 – the link is below – and includes Southside Newington locations in Blackford, St Leonards, and The Grange. The Communal Bin Review (CBR) project team have managed requests to move or remove Bin Hubs since 2021. After completion of the CBR, early 2027, requests will be managed by Officers in Neighbourhood Environmental Services.

Appeal from Southside Community Council for Local Place Plan Ideas

If you study, live or work in Edinburgh's Southside or are involved in organising and running communities in Southside, there's a really rare opportunity to have a direct say in how the neighbourhood develops over the next 10 years. It's called a Local Place Plan, and the City of Edinburgh Council has to factor this into the City Plan 2040. So it's worth doing! You can register for a community workshop, fill in a short survey or add your feedback on the interactive map; all of this can be found visiting sccedinburgh.org.uk/lpp.

World Heritage Day Photography Competition

Photography enthusiasts will have until October 2026 to submit work showcasing Edinburgh in all its glory across the seasons. The competition, part of World Heritage Day 30th birthday celebrations, is open to both amateur and professional photographers, using any camera or device. The initiative is run by Edinburgh World Heritage, Historic Environment Scotland, and the City of Edinburgh Council. For further details, go to Photography competition to kick off 30th birthday celebrations for Capital’s World Heritage Site   - Edinburgh World Heritage.

Listed Building Status for Lads’ Institute

27 – 29 Ratcliffe Terrace, the Lads’ Institute, has been granted listed building status by Historic Scotland. Lads’ Institutes were set up as recreational and sports clubs in the early 20th century to cater for young boys who were not settling into the school system, differing from other reforming types of clubs, previously for working men. Only a few purpose-built premises for such organisations were ever built throughout Britain. 27 – 29 Ratcliffe Terrace is a rare example of iconic Arts & Crafts style, built in 1906/7.
