In the Chamber

A full council meeting was held on the 19th March.

Discussed was the proposed public holiday for Scotland's opening match in the football world cup. In line with many other councils it was decided not to grant a public holiday to council workers because it would mean shutting schools and many folk working outside the council would not necessarily have the same holiday so child care could be a problem. And of course, there is a cost. However the council has provided relaxed licensing conditions during the Scottish games so fans can come together to celebrate Scotland's victories (fingers crossed) !

Other items for discussion was the policy on Artificial Intelligence. AI is beginning to be widely used in schools and elsewhere. It offers the potential for greater efficiency but there are also significant risks and so should be used with caution. Hence the motion to provide a working framework. On my suggestion the policy will be reviewed quarterly rather than annually due to the fast changing nature of AI.

Also there was a deputation on the impact on birds due to site clearing at the Dandara site New Brustane (Info Here). The council agreed unanimously on a motion to provide a report to committee allowing council to step in more swiftly and proactively to protect the natural habitat.

In addition, my motion to provide a budget for the canal strategy was passed without division.

St Cuthbert's RC Primary School

An emergency closure of St Cuthbert's RC Primary School meant approximately 180 pupils were moved to other schools, including St Peter’s Primary and St Augustine’s High School, while an assessment was conducted. The nursery remains open

Apparently the staff noticed that the floor was bowing/tilting. This was directly above the main hall and entrance. Immediately the staff responded and the council stepped into help with moving children to new premises where they can continue their work. So far it seems the disruption to children has been minimised as much as possible.

Canalside Clearup

I had a complaint from a local resident about rubbish accidently spilling over the wall from the local Tesco shop near Meggetland. I have contact the manager and the rubbish will be better secured particularly when windy. Next step is to try to clear up the rubbish and I have contacted Scottish Canals and other stakeholders to determined the best method to safely remove it.

More information to follow.

Incidentally, I am also expecting a new bin on Meggetland Bridge!

Harrison Bridge(s)

September seems to be the date when the road will be reopened.
