Support needed for Bereaved Children

17 Feb 2023

Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has written to the Scottish Government asking them to consider a proposal to record the number of children affected by bereavement.

Research from Winston’s Wish shows that amongst the wide range of adverse childhood experiences, the loss of parent or guardian can be amongst the most impactful.

Christine is also seeking a debate in Westminster on the subject and recently received an endorsement from Leader of the House.

Christine said:

“The trauma of losing a loved one can have lifelong effects on the wellbeing and life chances of affected children and young people. That is why I have written to the Scottish Government asking for their support.

“In order to properly tackle this issue, we need to understand just how many children and young people are affected and therefore we need accurate data available.

“Whether it is as easy as including a provision within a death certificate to state whether there are dependent children, we have to find a way.

“I know this is a cause that people throughout the UK and across the political spectrum care about and so I am confident we can work together to lay the foundations for vital support.”

First elected in 2017, Christine was re-elected in 2019.

Edinburgh West speaks up on Cost of Living

Christine has launched a Cost of Living survey to which over 700 households have already responded.

The Lib Dem MP is contacting residents to find out how the crisis is affecting them and what action they want to see from their politicians.

She said: “We mustn’t lose sight of the impact that this is having on real people who are finding the cost of everything from their shopping to energy bills or simply keeping a roof over their families heads getting more difficult by the day.

“This is not just about money markets or the value of the pound; it has a real and direct impact on the lives of families, pensioners and businesses and I want to know what you want your politicians to do about it.

“From the results so far, it is clear that people in Edinburgh West feel that the UK Government is simply not doing enough to ease the burden people are increasingly facing."
