Maybury/Craigs Rd Junction Update Feb'25
Originally planned for Spring 2023, the works to upgrade the junction on Maybury Road and Craigs Road have been subject to constant delay.
The Lib Dem team recently met with residents of the West Craigs development to discuss the long-promised project, and have now received an update from the Council that work is planned to finally begin in Spring this year.
Local Lib Dem councillor Ed Thornley said, "While this will be welcome news to many residents, on both sides of Maybury Road, it's more than understandable that they will be sceptical until work actually begins.
"This work has been promised time and time again, and some residents of West Craigs have now been living there nearly two years, waiting for this promised change. All that time, the only crossing point for an incredibly busy road has been a temporary crossing. It's simply not safe for the number of people now needing to use it.
"We still need clarity too on what the impact will be for residents in East Craigs - how long will the works take, what will the impact be - especially on streets like East Craigs Rigg where their own junction is so close to this one.
“The whole process around this work has been a shambles - residents need clarity before work begins, and a confirmed timeline.”
A further concern for residents has been the impact of the planned redirection of the 31 bus route. This would change the route so that, instead of heading along Maybury Road to the roundabout at Maybury Drive, the bus would instead route down Turnhouse Road, then back along Craigs Road onto Maybury Road again. The route from there would be unchanged.
Ed Thornley said, "We have now had confirmation that this change will not take place until after the junction works. It's a difficult one, because residents in West Craigs need a bus services, but residents in East Craigs are understandably very worried about extending this already long and unreliable route.
“We'll keep working with Lothian Buses and the Council to try and resolve these concerns, but for now there will be no route change until the junction works have been completed.”
