GP surgery needed to cope with new housing

With the massive amount of new housing planned for Gyle, Edinburgh Park and West Craigs, local MSP, Alex Cole-Hamilton
has launched a campaign to see a new GP practice established that will serve the Gyle and South Corstorphine.

Alex has repeatedly raised in Parliament the fact the new housing developments are often green-lighted without any consideration of the impact on local health services.

But existing practices at Ladywell and East Craigs are vastly overstretched and confirm that they could not withstand the influx of new residents from things like the Garden district development, West Craigs or Edinburgh Park.

Alex has met with developers, NHS Lothian and the council to make the case for a new surgery, perhaps at Edinburgh Park and initial reaction to this has been positive. However, Alex is keen to demonstrate a high level of public support for a new surgery and has launched a petition which he will present to NHS Lothian.

He said: “Our local GPs do an amazing job, but they are vastly overstretched.

"There hasn’t been a new surgery established in this part of the city in nearly 50 years despite a year on year increase in housing.

"That’s why it’s time to release the pressure on existing surgeries with the establishment of a new practice- dedicated to serving new communities at Gyle and Edinburgh Park.

"I think we’re half way there in convincing the health board, but a big display of public opinion through my petition will help our case.”
