Bridgend success story

Renovation work has finally begun on Bridgend Farmhouse on Old Dalkeith Road. This follows a five year campaign to win a £1m grant from the Big Lottery and the support of Edinburgh City Council which has given the building to the local community trust, Bridgend Inspiring Growth.

John Knox, Treasurer of the trust, says: “ It’s been a huge effort to get this far, but at last we are seeing this lovely 19th century farmhouse being restored. We are planning to open it as a community centre specialising in healthy eating and the outdoors. It’s next to the allotments and on the edge of Craigmillar Castle Park. The plan is to open a training kitchen and café and a series of workshops to be used by anyone in the local community, disabled groups, school parties, retired people’s clubs, arts and crafts groups etc. We hope it will be a place of friendship and special charm for everyone in our part of the city.”

The renovation should be complete by November this year. In the meantime, weekly drop-in sessions will continue on site every Wednesday and Sunday. Check out what’s happening at www.bridgendfarmhouse.org.uk
