I am writing to you on behalf of many local residents to express huge concern over the proposed closure of Inverleith Medical Practice. While it is understood that Dr Inwood and Dr Stewart made a decision to leave the practice, it is our view that this should not mean that the local surgery must be closed.

As a prospective candidate for Inverleith area I guess that you are aware of the importance of saving this surgery from closure. This suregy is located in the heart of Inverleith area and it services a large population of elederly and infirm people as well as families; You may be aware that there are two sheltered housing blocks in close vicinity of the surgery; the proposed relocation of the surgery to another area would inevitably mean difficulties with access by people with mobility problems. Equally important is making sure that patients are saved the distress of wating a long time for appointments; as it is we have experienced longer and longer waiting times for an appointment at the local practice. I personally remember being able to book an appointment either the same day or the following day a few years ago. Over time this has extended to a week! There is a huge concern, that if the local patients were to be transferred to a neighbouring practice/practices, this would result in other center/s having to cope with much larger number of patients and the fear is that the wating times would be even worse.

Have you done anything about preventing this closure already? Can I appeal to you to do all that is within your power to prevent this proposed closure by putting in place an effective mechanism for NHS Lothian to purchase the surgery from the current owners and by securing recruitment of new doctors so that the local facility can continue to service the local community?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I’m contacting you on behalf of Edinburgh Women’s Aid, we are an organisation which provides specialist services to women children and young people with experience of domestic abuse. We work across the whole Edinburgh area and with women and children from all communities.

Last year we had contact with 1500 women and supported 237 children and young people. Our services include the provision of safe temporary accommodation, crisis counselling, information and support to help women to make the choices which are correct for them and support to children and young people including outreach support in schools and delivery of the CEDAR programme.

Demand for our services are increasing year on year and the provision of specialist support is vital to help women, children and young people to recover from their experiences. We believe it is imperative that the voices of women and children are heard by elected representative to ensure that decisions take into account the distinct needs of those with experience of domestic abuse.

We are contacting all candidates to ask you to pledge that if elected you will ensure that the voices of women, children and young people from all the communities of Edinburgh are heard and all the needs of those affected by domestic abuse are made visible in all areas of council policy.

If successful in your campaign we would be delighted to have you visit our services and hear first hand from us about the work we do.

We look forward to hearing from you.

    Yours faithfully

    Linda Rodgers
